EEF lifts forecasts as manufacturing thrives ... or does it?
EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, has raised its growth forecasts for the UK manufacturing sector for 2008, following a survey which shows that Britain’s manufacturers are continuing to defy the pervading economic gloom. According to the study, conducted by EEF with Grant Thornton, manufacturers achieved their tenth consecutive quarter of healthy growth in the second quarter of 2008.

Building boom fuels HVAC drives sales
The boom in the construction business across Europe has boosted sales of variable speed drives for HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) applications, says a new report. The study, from Frost & Sullivan, says that drives revenues from HVAC applications in Europe were worth $292.5m in 2007, and predicts that they will reach $456.5m by 2014. HVAC sales represent about 10% of the total drives market, according to F&S.

Swarming motor-driven `jellyfish` could lead to automation innovations
In recent years, Festo has established a tradition for developing attention-grabbing mechanical creatures that swim around a large tank on its stand at the Hannover Fair. In the past, these have included lifelike sharks and rays that move around under remote control in an uncannily fishlike manner.

Acquisition yields tough AC drives family
The Finnish drives-maker Vacon has launched a range of AC drives designed for use in harsh environments, where dirt, dust, humidity and liquids may be present. The X drives are based on a range originally launched in 2005 by US-based TB Wood`s, whose AC drives business Vacon acquired last year for $29m. The drives will continue to be sold in the US under their original SE2, X4 and X5 names.
